What's actually here
Island Park has a small permanent population (193 in the 2020 Census) and is surrounded by 3+ million acres of national forest. That combination means services are concentrated along US-20 and become sparse once you leave the highway corridor. Below is the working map: where to gas up, where you have cell coverage, where to find emergency services, and where the gaps are.
Fuel stations
South to north along US-20:
- Ashton (mile -33 from Island Park): Multiple stations. Last reliable mid-priced fuel before Island Park.
- Henry’s Lake Station (north Island Park): Truck-stop level fuel and convenience. Open 24/7. Diesel available.
- Sinclair / Subway at 4141 Sawtelle Peak Road (mid Island Park): The main mid-Island-Park option. Open extended hours.
- Island Park General Store (south end): Gas and diesel 24/7.
- West Yellowstone, MT (mile +30 from Island Park): Multiple stations including the Sinclair on Canyon Street — the closest reliable fuel inside Yellowstone visitors’ reach.
Inside Yellowstone
Fuel is available inside Yellowstone but is meaningfully more expensive and lines are long in July. Fill up in West Yellowstone before entering the park.
Cell coverage reality
Three things to know:
Where coverage works
US-20 corridor through Island Park: reasonable coverage. The lodges at Mack’s Inn, Pond’s Lodge, TroutHunter, and most cabins on the highway have working cell signal for most carriers.
Where coverage disappears
- Any direction off US-20 by more than 2–3 miles
- Big Springs trail, Mesa Falls byway middle sections, Sawtelle Peak Road
- Almost all of the Caribou-Targhee NF backcountry
- Most of the Henry’s Lake area
- Inside Yellowstone (spotty even near visitor centers; nonexistent in the backcountry)
What to do about it
- Download offline maps (Google Maps, Avenza, OnX) before driving north of Ashton
- Tell someone your plan before going off the highway
- For multi-day backcountry trips, consider a satellite communicator (Garmin inReach Mini, Zoleo, etc.)
- WiFi is generally available at the lodges and most cabins (varies — check with your specific Grandview cabin)
Emergency services
911
911 calls do connect from most of Island Park when cell coverage exists. Response times are longer than in urban areas — expect 15–30 minutes for serious emergencies, longer for backcountry.
Fire
Fremont County Fire (volunteer department) handles Island Park. Wildland fire is the primary risk in July through October. Fremont County Emergency Management Facebook posts real-time fire updates and road closures.
